Thyroid Flashcards
thyroid follicular cells regulate what? they produce what yalllll???
rate of metabolism and growth, they make T3 and T4, YA NEED IODINE OMG
what do thyroid c cells make
calcitonin (ooposite actions of PTH)
hypothyroidism is common in _____, and what are the two possible causes?
dogs
- idiopathic follicular collapse
- lymphoctic thyroiditis
C/S of hypothyroidism?
reduced metabolic rate, weight gain, alopecia, hyperkeratosis, hyperpigmentation, myxedema (mucin and water in the dermis, thiccccc skin ew), hypercholesterolemia, low sperm/fertility
what is goiter? causes?
clinical term used to describe a NONNEOPLASTIC and NON INFLAMMATORY enlargement of the thyroid glands
causes:
iodine deficiency, goitrogenic compounds, excess idodine, genetic enzyme defects
pathogenesis of goiter?
not enough thyroid hormone synthesis, decreased blood T3 and T4, increased TRH, increased TSH, hypertrophy/hyperplasia of follicular cells
what is CHDS in foals?
congenital hypothyroidism-Dysmaturity Syndrome: foals die quickly after being born, common in western canada, prolonged gestation, appear dysmature, MSK abnormalities, mandibular prognathia, don’t know what causes it!
hyperthyroidism is common in _____. what is the cause usually?
cats
multifocal nodular hyperplasia and thyroid follicular adenoma»»>thyroid follicular carcinoma
if a dog gets hyperthyriodism, what’s the prognosis?
BAD it’s usually malignant
what is one reason why hyperthyroidism is less common in dogs
they have more efficinecy enterohepatic excretion of thyroid hormones
C/S hyperthyroidism?
weight loss with increased appetite
PUPD
can look like HCM–>tachycardia
abscence of normal fat in places like mesentery and perirenal
multifocal nodular hyerplasia of the thyroid gland is common in ____ and is inactive, except in ____. these will look
old horses and cats
cats
like multiple, tan to brown nonencapsulated nodules
thyroid follocicular cell adenoma is common in ____. what they lookin like doe???
cats
single, white to tan, well defined and encapslated mass
thyroid follicular carcinomas are common in _____, how do they look???
dogs, they are invasive and will not respect tissue borders
