parathyroid :) Flashcards
1
Q
what cells secrete PTH ____. this is secreted when??
A
chief cells
when there is low blood Ca, targeting the bone and kidneys
2
Q
hypoparathyroidism is uncommon, but what are some potential causes? clinicals igns youd see?
A
- lymphocytic parathyroiditis (immune meidated destruction)
- destruction from metastatic tumor
- parathyroid gland atrophy (like if a tumor elsewehre is making calcium so it goes on vacation)
- accidental surgical removal
C/S: restlness, ataxic, weak, tremors, tetany, seizures
3
Q
primary hyperparathyroidism is the result of…most common in….usually benign or malignant?
A
functional chief cell neoplasm
common in older dogs
usually adneomas»>carcinomas
4
Q
2 consedquences of excess PTH:
A
- bone lesions from widespread osteoclastic resorption/fribrous osteodystrophy
- hypercalcemia which interferes with ADH at collectin tubule–>anorexia, PUPD, muscle weakness, soft tissue mineralization
5
Q
secondary hyperparathyroidism is more common than primary. what are the two big causes?
A
- renal: excess PTH from hypocalcemia and impaired production of Vit D
- nutritional: low calcium, low vit D, or high phosphorus
6
Q
with secondary hyperparathyroidism what will the parathyroid glands look like?
A
they will ALL be big
