describe the ways in which diabetes mellitus happens?
- inadequate synthesis and release frombeta cells, an islet specific disease or from chronic pancreatitis
- failure of target cells to respond–>obese cats, cushings patients, drugs or hormones
describe type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus
type 1: juvenile onset, severe absolute def of insulin, autoimmune destruction of beta cells, DOGS get this one
type 2: adult onset, insulin resiatance initially and then number of beta cells decrease with time, genetic and lifestyle based like obese cats, can have islet amyloidosis, CATS get this
is it easy to diagnose diabtes mellitus on PM?
NO! often no pancreatic lesions will be seen, it’s best as a clinical diagnosis
what are some extrapnacreatic lesions of diabetes mellitus?
dehydration, poor body condition, HEPATIC LIPIDOSIS, cataracts (in dogs), secondary infections (like UTIs from sugar pee), chronic renal disease
ferrets get a tumor of the pancreas and it’s super common what is it omg this one is easy
INSULINOMA! from excessive insulin! clinical signs will be from hypoglycemia: weakness, ataxia, mental confusion, seizures, etc
are insulinomas easy to find on PM?
