Thiamine Class
• Vitamin
Thiamine MOA
• Combines with adenosine triphosphate (ATP) to form thiamine pyrophosphate (coenzyme essential for carbohydrate metabolism)
Thiamine Indications
• Adjunct therapy that should proceed the administration of dextrose or glucagon to malnourished or alcoholic patients
Thiamine Adult dose
• 100 mg IV/IO very slow (over 5 minutes) or deep IM
Thiamine Contraindications
• Known hypersensitivity
Thiamine Adverse effects
• Vasodilation
• Hypotension
• Weakness (usually from dose given to fast via IV)
• Diaphoresis
• Itching
• Hives
• Nausea
• Flush feeling
Thiamine Pediatric dose
• Consult medical direction before delivery to any patient less than 14 years old
