Succinylcholine G6 Flashcards
1
Q
Succinylcholine Class
A
- Depolarizing neuromuscular blocker
- Skeletal muscle relaxant
2
Q
Succinylcholine MOA
A
- Ultra-short-acting depolarizing skeletal muscle relaxant that mimics acetylcholine
- Binds with cholinergic receptors on motor endplate, producing phase I block manifested by muscle fasciculations
3
Q
Succinylcholine Indications
A
- Adjunct to provide skeletal muscle relaxation and facilitate tracheal intubation and ventilation
4
Q
Succinylcholine Adult dose
A
• 1 – 1.5 mg/kg IV/IO rapid push
5
Q
Succinylcholine Contraindications
A
- Known hypersensitivity
- Renal failure
- Para or quadriplegic, muscular dystrophy history or other neuromuscular diseases
- Stroke with residual muscle dysfunction
- History of malignant hyperthermia
- Penetrating ocular injuries due to increased intraocular pressure caused by med
- Pt sustained multisystem trauma, burns, prolonged immobilization, or limb entrapment resulting in hyperkalemia
- Known or suspected hyperkalemia
- Predicted difficult intubation

Q
Succinylcholine Adverse effects
A
• Apnea
• Respiratory depression
• Dysrhythmias,
• Cardiac arrest
• Hyperkalemia (trauma and burn patients)
• Increased intracranial, intraocular and intragastric pressures
• Excessive salivation
• Prolonged muscle rigidity
• Rhabdomyolysis
• Malignant hyperthermia

Q
Succinylcholine Pediatric dose
A
• Pediatrics: 1 – 1.5 mg/kg IV/IO rapid push
• Infants: 2 mg/kg IV/IO rapid push
