Diazepam Class
• Benzodiazepine
• Anticonvulsant
• Sedative
• Hypnotic
Diazepam MOA
• Produces sedation by acting on the limbic system, the thalamus, and hypothalamus
• Binds to gamma-amino butyric acid (GABA) benzodiazepine receptors in the brain
• Raises the seizure threshold
• Produces tranquilizing (antianxiety) effect on the central nervous system
Diazepam Indications
• Seizure activity
• Status epilepticus
• Procedural sedation for rapid sequence intubation and cardioversion
• Chemical restraint for agitated (excited) delirium
• Delirium tremens
• Severe anxiety
Diazepam Adult dose
• 2.0 mg increments over 2 minutes
Diazepam Contraindications
• Known hypersensitivity to the drug
• Head injury
Diazepam Adverse effects
• Sedation
• Transient amnesia
• Respiratory depression
• Bradycardia
• Hypotension
Diazepam Pediatric dose
• IV/IO: 0.2 to 0.3 mg/kg
• IM: 0.1 to 2.0 mg/kg
• Rectal: 0.2 to 0.5 mg/kg
