The Senses - Ear Flashcards
2 functions of the ear?
hearing, balance
Ear is composed of what 3 sections?
inner middle outer
What are each of the sections filled with?
outer and middle = air
inner = fluid called lymph
Vibrations are gathered by?
pinna
Pinna is mostly made of?
cartilage
Function of pinna?
collect and channel vibrations into the auditory canal
Functions of auditory canal?
carries vibrations to the eardrum,
wax is secreted outside the eardrum to trap dust and protect the ear
What is the eardrum? Describe it
small, tightly stretched membrane that seperates the outer ear from the middle ear
it vibrates due to air vibrations that reach it,
Ossicles are 3 tiny bones called?
hammmer anvil stirrup
Where are ossicles located (section)?
middle ear
What’s the smallest bone in the body?
stirrup
2 functions of ossicles?
transmit vibrations from the outer to the inner ear,
amplify the vibrations
Eustachian tube runs from where to where?
middle ear to pharynx/throat
Function of the eustachian tube?
equalises pressure on either side of the eardrum
Cochlea is responsible for? How does it do this?
hearing: by converting pressure waves caused by sound vibrations into electricaal impulses that travel to the brain
Balance is detected where? (Consisting of?)
the vestibular apparatus in the inner ear, consisting of 3 semicircular canals
Hearing disorder and the corrective measure?
glue ear - grommets
