The Blood ORGANISING ANIMALS AND PLANTS Flashcards
What does plasma carry?
Red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets.
What does the blood plasma do?
It is a yellow liquid. It transports all your blood cells and some tiger substances around your body.
Such as:
Waste carbon dioxide produced by the cells is carried to the lungs.
Urea formed in your liver from the breakdown of excess proteins is carried to your kidneys where it is removed from your blood to form urine.
What are red blood cells?
Biconcabe discs This gives them an increased surface area to volume ratio for diffusion.
They contain haemoglobin that binds to oxygen.
No nucleus, more room for haemoglobin.
What is the function of red blood cells?
Pick up oxygen from the air in your lungs and carry it to the cells where it is needed.
What is a white blood cell?
Much bigger jab red blood cells. They are part of the bodies defence systems against harmful micro-organisms.
What are platelets?
Small fragments of cells which have no nucleus. They help the blood to clot at the site of a wound. This prevents you bleeding to death. It fires and gardens to form a scab. It also prevents bacteria entering the body through the wound.
