Cell division CELL DIVISION Flashcards
What is mitosis?
A type of cell division. The cell divides to make a replica of itself. At the end of mitosis there are 2 daughter cells that are identical to the parent cell. They have the same genetic material. However, there is no longer a parent cell.
What happens in mitosis?
The parent cell replicates it’s DNA, divides the contents of its cytoplasm and makes 2 new cells.
What is step 1 in mitosis?
Interphase
-the cell grows and carries out its functions and makes copies of its DNA.
What is step 2 in mitosis?
Prophase
The complex of DNA and proteins known as chromatin condenses to form thicker shorter chromosomes and the nuclear membrane breaks down.
-this is the process that separates the duplicated genetic material carries in the nucleus.
What is the 3rd step of mitosis?
Metaphase
The cells chromosomes align themselves in the middle of the cell
What is the 4th stage of mitosis?
Anaphase
The duplicates centromeres of each pair of sister chromatids separates and the now-daughter chromosomes begin moving away toward opposite poles of the cell die to all the action of the spindle.
What is stage 5 of mitosis?
Telophase.
The cell divides. The sister chromatids reach opposite poles.
The nucleus membrane in the cell begins to reform around the group of chromosomes at each end.
What is a gene?
Controls the characteristics, it is a section of DNA.
What is a chromosome?
A group of genes.
How many chromosomes do you have?
46 (23 pairs).
