Diffusion CELL STRUCTURE AND TRANSPORT Flashcards
What is diffusion?
The spreading out of the particles of a gas, or any substance in solution (a solute).
What is the net movement?
The overall movement of particles.
What direction is the net movement?
An area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration of the particles. The motion causes them to bump into each other, and this moves them all around.
What causes diffusion to take place quickly?
If there is a bigger difference in concentration between two areas.
What does net movement equal?
Net movement = particles moving in - particles moving out.
What is the concentration gradient?
The difference between two areas of concentration.
What direction down diffusion occur?
Down the concentration gradient.
How does temperature effect the ate of diffusion?
An increase in temperature means the particles in a gas or a solution move around more quickly. When this happens, diffusion takes place more rapidly as the random movement of the particles speeds up.
How do dissolved substances move into and out of your cells?
By diffusion.
How can cells be adapted to increase diffusion?
By increasing the surface area of the cell membrane. By folding up the cell membrane of a cell, or the tissue of a living organ, the area of which diffusion takes place increases rapidly. This means that much more of a substance moves in a given time.
