Q

What does Turgid mean?

A

Swollen, specially due to high fluid content. It is essential in plant cells to make them keep standing upright.

Q

What does plasmolysed mean?

A

The shrinking of protoplasm away from the cell wall of a plant or bacterium due to water loss from osmosis. It results in gaps between the cell wall and cell membrane.

Q

What is Osmosis?

A

The overall net movement of water through a partially permeable membrane from a dilute solution (which has a high concentration of water) down a concentration gradient.

Q

Why does a plant cell not explode during Osmosis?

A

The cellulose in the cell wall is very strong. It takes in the water.

Q

What will happen if the solution outside a cell becomes hypotonic (more diluted) than the cell contents? Water will move in by osmosis. The cell will swell and may burst.

Q

Why do plants rely on osmosis?

A

To support their stems and leaves. Water moves into the cell by osmosis, causing he vacuole to swell, which presses the cytoplasm against the plant cell wall. The pr sure builds up until no more water can enter the cell. This is when the cell becomes turgid. This makes the cell hard and rigid, which keeps the leaves and stems of the plant firm.
