Cells CELL STRUCTURE AND TRANSPORT Flashcards
What does the nucleus do?
Controls the activities in the cell, it contains genetic material.
What does the cytoplasm do?
Jelly-like, where most chemical reaction happen.
What does the cell membrane do?
It controls what goes in and out of the cell.
What does the mitochondria do?
Where reactions for aerobic respiration happen. Respiration releases energy for the cell.
What does the cell wall do?
A rigid outer coating made of cellulose. It gives support to the cell.
What does the vacuole do?
Filled with cell sap. This keeps the cell rigid and supports the plant.
What do the chloroplasts do?
Contain chloroplasts which is needed for photosynthesis.
What is a prokaryotic cell?
A unicellular cell that lacks organelles. They don’t have a nucleus but they have single chromosome: a piece of circular, double-stranded DNA which is found in an area called the nucleoid.
What is a eukaryotic cell?
A eukaryote is any organism whose cells have a cell nucleus and other organelles enclosed within membranes.
Give an example of a prokaryotic cell?
Bacteria
Give examples of eukaryotic cells?
Most organisms are eukaryotes. Yeast is an example.
What do ribosomes do?
Where protein synthesis happens
What does a plant cell have that an animal cell doesn’t?
Chloroplasts
Vacuole
Cell wall.
Why do the chloroplasts contain and what does it do?
Chlorophyll. It absorbs light so the plant can make food by photosynthesis.
What is the cell wall made of?
Cellulose. It strengthens the cell and gives it support.
