Mechanism of action of Tetracyclines
Inhibit bacterial protein synthesis by binding to 30S
They inhibit transfer RNA to joint messenger RNA
Becoming bacteriostatic
Side effects of Tetracyclines
Nausea, vomiting, diarrohoea
Allergy
Discolouration or hypoplasia of tooth enemal if given to children
Intercranial hypertension - very rare
Photosensitivity
Oesophageal irritation, dysphagia, ulcers
Warnings of Tetracyclines
Pregnancy
Breast feeding
Children <12yrs
Renal impairment
Interactions of Tetracyclines
Should not be given within 2 hours of calcium, iron, or antacids
Kills gut flora so increases efficacy of warfarin.
