A
First line for uncomplicated UTI - alternatives trimethoprim, amoxicillin

Nitrofurantoin mechanism of action
A
It is metabolised inside bacterial cells.
Its active metabolites damage the DNA, causing cell death (Bactericidal).

Side effects of Nitrofurantoin
A
Allergy
GI upset (nausea and diarrohoea)
Dark yellow or brown urine
Hepatitis
Peripheral neuropathy
Haemolytic anaemia

A
pregnant woman towards term
babies in the first 3 months of life
Renal impairment
