Penicillins Flashcards
Indications of penicillin
Tonsilitis
Pneumonia
Endocarditis and skin and soft tissue infection
Clostridium infection for example tetanus
Meningococcal infection - meningitis, septicaemia
Drugs of the class penicillin
Amoxicillin
Benzylpenicillin
Tazobactam/tazocin
Side effects of penicillin
Allergy 1-10% of people. which present as a rash or a anaphylactic reaction.
CNS toxicity
Contra-indications of penicillin
Renal impairment
History of penicillin allergy
Interactions of Penicillin
reduce renal excretion of methotroxate which increases risk of toxicity
Mechanism of action of Penicillins
Inhibits the enzyme responsible for cross-linking peptidoglycans in bacterial cell walls.
This weakens cell walls.
Therefore –> cell swelling, lysis, and death
Penicillins beta lactam ring.
What is the relationship between beta lactams and penicillin
penicillin containt beta lactam chains which is responsible for their antimicrobial activity.
Bacter resist penicillin by making beta lactamase which break these chains.
