Macrolides are irritants causing nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain when taking orally and thrombophlebitis if IV
Allergy
antibiotic associated colitis
cholestatic jaundice
prolongation if QT interval
ototoxicity with high doses
MOD Macrolides
inhibit bacterial protein synthesis by binding to 50S subunit of bacterial ribosome and block translocation
Bacteriostatic
Interactions Macrolides
erythromycin and clarithromycin inhibit p450 (not azithromycin)
caution with pts taking QT prolonging medication or cause arrythmias.
Warnings of Macrolides
severe hepatic
low dose severe renal
