Teaching Styles and Methods Flashcards
Pedagogy - Definition
Method and style of education, including the study and practice of how best to teach.
Basic Learning Steps - 1 of 5
Must possess the motor skills necessary to execute the movements
Basic Learning Steps - 2 of 5
Memorize the steps or sequence
Basic Learning Steps - 3 of 5
Understand how an exercise is supposed to look and feel
Basic Learning Steps - 4 of 5
Have the body awareness to perform movements correctly and repeatedly
Basic Learning Steps - 5 of 5
Have the ability to physiologically keep up with the demands of learning
GFIs Role in Learning (2 total)
- Build rapport
- Provide effective instructions that are clear and concise
Teaching Principles (5 total)
- Set-up
- Execution
- Transitions
- Cueing
- Rhythm
Set-up - Considerations (3 total)
- Name the exercise
- Position the equipment or body
- The “start” position
Execution - Considerations (3 total)
- Performing the movement or exercise through the full range of motion (ROM) w/ correct technique and form
- Use only words that impact the outcome (economy of words)
- Words should be clear and concise
Integrating Learning Styles Thru Cueing (2 total)
- Strive to effectively integrate visual, verbal, and kinesthetic cues to coach participants
- Add brief learning opportunities to improve the overall experience (i.e. identify target muscle groups and benefits)
Transitions - Types (3 total)
- Matching
- Mending
- Patching
Transitions - Definition
- Flowing to the next exercise maintains motion and connects one exercise to the next
Matching - Definition
Where one exercise ends, another starts
Matching - Example
A barbell front squat followed by an over head press or a grapevine followed by single-leg hamstring curls
Mending - Definition
Stringing two exercises/movements together
Mending - Example
Incorporating thrusters (a squat overhead press in unison) or a right knee and left uppercut performed simultaneously
Patching - Definition
Performing an additional movement between two exercises or movements for a seamless transition
Patching - Example
Burpees (a push up, knees tuck in to stand, and jump)
Cueing - Definition
Using as few words as possible to deliver directions and desired outcomes
Cueing - Rhythm Based
Cue must come before the movement
Cueing - Strength or Other Based
Cue may be corrective
Cueing - Guidelines - 1 of 5
Provide no more than one corrective action at a time and choose the most critical
Cueing - Guidelines - 2 of 5
Ensure gross movement errors are addressed first before refining other aspects of form and technique
Cueing - Guidelines - 3 of 5
Form and corrective cues should be sequential, often starting from the trunk/core then moving to the extremities
Cueing - Guidelines - 4 of 5
Cues should be positive and solution-based
Cueing - Guidelines - 5 of 5
Build vocabulary that doesn’t use negative words or filler
Proximal - Definition
Nearest to the midline of the body or point of origin of a muscle
Distal - Definition
Farthest from the midline of the body, or from the point of origin of a muscle
Rhythm- Definition
the tempo of the movement
Rhythm - Choreographed Class
Based on the music’s beats per minute
Rhythm - Other or Strength Based
Can manipulate the cadence which can affect the overload
Rhythm - Music Background Based
Music provokes emotion and motivation and helps keep exercises in motion, enhancing skill acquisition
Overload - Definition
The principle that a physiological system subjected to above-normal stress will respond by increasing in strength or function accordingly
