Slow-to- Fast Strategy - Definition
Teaching strategy used to allow participants to learn complex movement at a slower pace, emphasizing proper placement or configuration of a movement pattern
i.e. grapevine at 8 count
Half-Time - Definition
A means of reducing the challenge of a portion of choreography that involves performing a movement at half of the usual speed; often used when teaching new movements.
Repetition-Reduction Strategy - Definition
Teaching strategy involving reducing the number of repetitions that make up a movement sequence.
i.e. 4 grapevines and 8 hamstring curls then 2 grapevines and 4 hamstring curls
Part-to-Whole Strategy (add-in) - Definition
A teaching strategy involving breaking a skill down into its component parts and practicing each skill in its simplest form before placing several skills in a sequence.
i.e. bicep curls and squats performed separately and then integrated when ready
Simple - to - Complex Strategy (layering) - Definition
Advanced teaching strategy that treats a sequence of movement patterns as a whole, teaching small changes (adding small amounts of complexity) to progressively challenge the exercise participant.
Layering - Definition
A method of choreography wherein the instructor starts with a base move and then layers on one new element at a time.
Double-Time - Definition
A means of adding challenge to a choreographed workout routine that involves the performance of movement twice as fast as in an earlier section.
Syncopation - Definition
Temporary shifts in the normal pattern of stressed to unstressed beats or parts of beats.
i.e. 1, 2, 3 to 1, and, 2, and, 3, and
