yes, it is within your power to have more self-control than you do right now
muraven self-control improvement study
found that at the end of two weeks of sweets abstinence and hand gripping, participants had significantly improved on a difficult computerized concentration task that required lots of self-control
methods of self-controls studies
Self-control studies use many different approaches but they all force you to do something you’d rather not do
rest and self-control
- Just like other muscles, the self-control muscle needs to rest when it has been overextended
- But, this isn’t always possible
Strategies for when resting the self-control muscle isn’t an option:
- Take advantage of contagion
- Give yourself a pick-me-up (ex. gifts)
- Raise your blood glucose
self-control and goal contagion
- When we simply observe someone pursuing the goal of resisting temptation, it’s contagious and beneficial to our self-control
- When we mentally stimulate what they are doing, it can reduce our self-control strength
blood glucose and self-control
Blood glucose is depleted during self-control tasks
when are addicts most likely to relapse?
- Addicts use the acronym HALT (hungry, angry, lonely, tired) to describe when they are more likely to relapse
- All of these conditions are characterized by lowered self-control
Strategies for limiting your need for self-control:
- Stopping before you start
- Focusing on why thinking and self-monitoring
- Don’t pursue two goals at once that both require a lot of self-control
- Use well-chosen incentives
estimating one’s self-control and self-control
- Most people overestimate their ability to control their impulses
- The more inflated one’s beliefs are, the more we expose ourselves to temptation
