‘to study’ ≠ ‘studieren’
to study at university or graduate student = studieren
to study independently or with tutor or group = lernen
lernen: use: at home, preparing for exam, or having private tutoring lessons.
Even at uni, if you want to say you are studying for an exam, you would use ‘lernen’.
‘studieren’ is the general act of being at university o Fachhochschule, following a study program there.
‘lernen’ is the actual studying you do at home.
