Structure of the eye Flashcards
Cornea
Refracts the light and protects the eye
Iris
Controls how much light enters the eye through the pupil
Lens
Focuses light on the retina
Optic Nerve
A bundle of sensory neurones that carry electrical impulses to the brain
Retina
Layer of tissue at the back of the eye that contains photoreceptor cells called rods and cones
Fovea
Area of the retina with highest concentration of cone cells that provide sharp vision
Aqueos Humor
Watery substance that maintains pressure in the eye
Vitreous Humour
Jelly - like substance that shape the eye and attaches the retina
Ciliary Muscle
Helps change the shape of the lens in the process accommodation
Sclera
Tough outer layer (the white part of the eye)
Suspensory Ligaments
Attach the lens to the ciliary muscles
Pupil
Hole in the centre of the eye that lets light in
Choroid
Layer containing blood vessels to deliver nutrients
e.g. oxygen, to the eye
Blind Spot
The optic disc is where the eye is connected to the optic nerve. There are no photoreceptors here.
Rods
Photoreceptors that work well in dim light but can only see black and white
