Antibiotic Resistance Flashcards
Mutation
Rare, random change in an organism’s DNA that can be inherited.
Change the sequence of the DNA bases in a gene which produces a genetic variant.
Enzymes
proteins which need an active site with a very specific shape to be able to work properly
Process of evolution in antibiotics
There is variation in the characteristics of organisms within the species
Changing conditions in the environment favours one particular form of the species
The frequency of the favoured form increases under these conditions. Survival of the fittest
The frequency of the less well adapted form decreases under these conditions
Over time, the gene that increases survival will become more common in the population making more bacteria antibiotic resistant
The problem with antibiotic resistance
- This is a problem is someone gets infected with this bacteria, because they are not affected by antibiotics. These are called superbugs. It is becoming more common.
