Fish Farming Flashcards
Method: Biological control organisms
Kills pest species
Using nets to cover tanks
Interspecific Predation -> prevents competition
Removal of waste products
avoids decomposition by bacteria which use up oxygen
Fish bred in small groups
avoids overcrowding for best traits
decreases spread of disease
Methods to farm large numbers of fish
- Maintaining water quality
- Controlling intraspecific predation
- Controlling interspecific predation
- Controlling disease
- Removing waste products
- Controlling quality and frequency of feeding
- Selective breeding
Method: Maintenance of water quality
- Filtering water - to prevent disease and maintain high O2 concentrations for aerobic respiration
Removing waste products + harmful bacteria - to prevent diseases
Method: Controlling Intraspecific Predation
Separating fish by size and age
Intraspecific Predation
Predation within the same species
Interspecific Predation
Predation between different species
Method: Controlling Interspecific Predation
Separating different species using fences/nets/tanks
Method: Controlling disease
- Adding antibiotics - to prevent disease (disease can spread quickly due to close confinement)
- Keeping fish in small numbers - to minimise the spread of diseases
Method: Removal of waste products
- Filter water to remove waste products (e.g. faeces and sewage)
- Fences/nets/tanks are cleaned
- Location of fish can be changed
Method: Quality and frequency of feeding
- Feed fish high nutrient food - for fast growth
- Feed fish frequently + in small amounts - to avoid overeating or start eating eachother
Method: Selective Breeding
- Separate fish by gender - so farmers can allow only fish with selective characteristics to reproduce. Ensures fish are fast growing
