Q

how does stoma open

and close

A

When K+ ions move into guard cells beside epidermal cells, water moves with it by osmosis causing guard to swell, opening stomata

When k+ ions move out guard cells, water follows by osmosis, causing guard cells to sag, closing stomata.

Q

What is the importance of the Stomata

A

 stomata create a “transpiration pull” through water loss
that draws water, minerals, and other key substances from the roots up to the leaves where they are used.

 Transpiration also provides a cooling effect that prevents leaves from heating to avoid denaturing

 Stomata also allow CO 2 to diffuse into the mesophyll where photosynthesis takes
place.
