Basics Flashcards
What is a Nucleotide
molecule that consists of a deoxyribose sugar, nitrogenous base and a phosphate group
What is a purines and pyrimidines
purines are double rings such as Adenineand Guanine and pyramidines are Cytosine and Thymine
what is a phosphodiester bond
a bond that happens between the phosphate group of one nucleotide and the deoxyribose sugar of another nucleotide
what is complementary base pairng
its Adenine always pairing with Thymine
and Guanine always pairing with Cytosine
Double helix formation
two single strands of DNA join through the creation of H bonds between base pairs, the two strands create a ladder with alternating sugars and phosphates as the sides of the ladder and the H bonded base pairs as the rungs of the ladder. two strands then coil creating helix
key notes:
Two strands are antiparallel
