Stem Cells Flashcards
What is asymmetric division?
Stem cell division that reproduces one daughter committed cell and one stem cell
How differentiated are precursor cells?
Partially
Totipotent?
All cells of organism including embryo and extraembryonic
Pluripotent?
All cells of embryo
Multipotent?
Different cells of particular lineage
What kind of potent are adult stem cells?
Multipotent
Where do all blood cells come from?
From hematopoietic stem cells in marrow.
How quickly do stem cells turn over in skin?
1-2 months
What does Wnt signaling do to stem cell proliferation?
Increases it in a positive feedback loop. Long range signals inhibit outside of stem cell crypt
What do stem cell niche cells do?
By staying attached to stem cell, signal it to remain stem cell. Adherens junctions
3 key stem cell transcription factors?
Oct4, Sox2, Nanog
