Muscle Flashcards
Skeletal muscle speciality?
Multinucleated at periphery. Striated, arranged in fascicles.
Smooth muscle characteristics?
Single corkscrew nucleus, not striated, in sheets, gap junctions
Cardiac muscle characteristics?
Single central nucleus, striated and branched fibers, intercalations. Much mitochondria
Myofiber makeup?
Muscle cell composed of myofibrils
Myofibril makeup?
Primary structural unit composed of myofilaments.
What are myofilaments made of?
Actin and myosin
Type one muscle characteristics?
Red, slow twitch. Small fibers, oxidative metabolism, high myoglobin
Type 2a muscle characteristics?
Medium, mix of oxidative and glycolysis. High glycogen
Type 2b muscle characteristics?
White, fast twitch. Glycolysis only. Fast ATPase.
How far does a sarcomere extend?
From Z line to Z line.
When contracting, does A band contract? H?
No. Yes
What masks the myosin binding sites? How is it unmasked?
Tropomyosin. Ca binds troponin C, exposing binding sites on actin
Where is myosin 2 found?
Only in the A band.
What does desmin do?
Attaches sarcomeres to each other at Z line
What does titin do?
Anchors thick filaments to the Z line
