Cartilage Flashcards
Chondrogenic cell location and purpose?
In perichondrium, spindle shaped and give rise to chondroblasts
Chondroblast function?
Produce most of cartilage matrix
Chondrocyte purpose?
Formed of chondroblast, maintain matrix. In lacunae
What stimulates and inhibits cartilage formation?
Stimulated by IGf1, thyroid hormone, and testosterone. Inhibited by cortisone and estradiol
What is cartilage matrix made of?
Type two collagen, and aggrecan molecules. Water and chondronectin( binds cyte to collagen)
Aggrecans are high in GAGs to do what?
Attract water for slipperyness and cushion
What are the two types of cartilage formation and how do they work?
Interstitial-division of blasts and cytes in cartilage
Appositional-division of chondrogenic cells at periphery
Difference between territorial matrix and inter territorial?
Territorial stains darker, high in chondroitin sulfate, at periphery. Inter is bulk of matrix
Three types of cartilage?
Hyaline- cushions articulate surfaces, bone templates.
Elastic cartilage-flexible, high in elastin
Fibrocartilage-looks like dense CT, no perichondrium. High collagen
Do chondrocytes use glucose aerobically?
No
