Nerve Flashcards
What do neurons do?
Process and transmit info. No new neurons
What do dendrites and axons do?
Dendrites receive, axons transmit
What is an axon hillock?
V shaped lead in to axon, no RER(nissl bodies)
What produces myelin in PNS? CNS?
Schwann cells.
Oligodendrocytes. One per axon
What does SER in neuron do?
Store calcium
Where are MAPs found?
Only in brain. Microtubules
Lipofuscin?
Indigestible materiel in lysosomes
Difference between bipolar and pseudounipolar?
Pseudo forms T junction with axon and dendrite. Bipolar in eye and ear, pseudo in dorsal root ganglion
Nerves use microtubules to deliver macromolecules within self. What are the motors?
Kinesin our, dynein in
Synapses?
Mostly chemical. Neurotransmitters released by exocytosis, alter membrane properties of receptor
What do glia do?
Support and insulate neurons. Can divide, so most nervous tumors are glial
Astrocytes contain what diagnostic marker?
GFAP. Part of blood brain barrier
What does ependyma do?
Make CSF
Microglia function?
Immune surveillance
Do nerves have fascical layers?
Yes. Epi, peri, endo. Look wavy
