Endocrine System Flashcards
Adrenal cortex layers out to in? Producing? Stimulated by?
Glomerulosa, fasciculata, reticularis. Aldosterone, cortisol, androgens. AII, ACTH.
Adrenal medulla is stimulates by what?
Preganglionic cells signal postganglionic cells to release epinephrine and norepinephrine
What kind of cells does the thyroid contain, and what do they look like?
Contains spheres of follicular cells containing colloid. Responds to TSH to make thyroglobulin
Where is iodine attached to tyrosine on thyroglobulin?
In the colloid
Graves’ disease cause?
Antibody binds TSH receptor, overproducing thyroid hormone
What do c cells in thymus do?
Clear cells that produce calcitonin in response to high calcium
What do parathyroid glands do?
Low serum calcium causes release of PTH by chief cells
What four cell types are in the islets of langerhans in the pancreas?
Alpha, beta, delta, PP
What do pancreatic alpha cells do?
Make glucagon
What do pancreatic beta cells do?
Produce insulin
What do pancreatic delta cells do?
Make somatostatin that inhibits alpha and beta
What do pancreatic Pp cells do?
Make PP that inhibits exocrine pancreas. Inhibit acini of insuloacini portal system
