Cardiovascular Flashcards
Layers of vessels in to out?
Lumen, intima, media, adventitia
Purpose of tunica intima?
Control point for blood flow. Single layer squamous, BL, outer elastic edge.
Purpose of tunica media?
Blood pressure and stability. Smooth muscle with external elastic membrane
What is the tunica adventitia made of?
Connective tissue and collagen
Large elastic artery makeup?
Intima has subendothelial elastic fibers, media is thickest with spiraled smooth muscle, adventitia contains vasa vasorum
Muscular artery makeup?
Prominent wavy waxy internal elastic membrane. Little elastic in media, mostly collagen in adventitia
Small artery makeup?
Have internal elastic membrane, 3-8 layers in media. Arterioles have 1-2
Metarteriole characteristics?
Incomplete smooth muscle, precapillary sphincter
Capillaries makeup?
Single layer of endothelial cells. Allows passage of one RBC at a time. Total diameter 800x aorta
What are pericytes?
Rouget cells. Contractile stem cells regulated by NO
Continuous capillaries?
Muscle and lungs, occluding junctions
Fenestrated capillaries?
Have holes, some with diaphragms made of glycocalyx.
Discontinuous capillaries?
Large and irregular. Marrow, liver
Venules makeup?
Only endothelial, larger than capillaries
Small veins makeup?
Thicker adventitia than media. Likely to have collapsed lumen
