Blood Flashcards
How much of blood is occupied by cells?
43%
What protein causes RBCs to have shape?
Spectrin
What are rouleaux formations?
Blood cells stacked like life savers
How many blood cells per mm cubed?
5x10^6. Polycythemia is too many. Anisiocytic is differing sizes.
How many leukocytes are in mm cubed? What percentage is that?
- 1 percent.
What percentage of white blood cells are neutrophils?
60-70%. Short life span in circulation, longer in tissues. Segmented nucleus and lavender cytoplasm.
What is a left shift of neutrophils?
High numbers of immature neutrophils in an infection
What is opsonization?
Where antibody coats bacteria by binding with Fab portion. Fc portion binds neutrophil
What is ESR?
How fast RBCs aggregate because of increased fibrinogen in infection
What is CRP test?
Macrophages produce IL6 and that makes liver produce CRP which quickly goes up in infection.
Eosinophil characteristics?
2-4% of leukocytes. 3-4 days in circulation, 8-12 in tissue. Contain MBP to kill parasites. Regulate other leukocytes
Basophils characteristics?
Less than 1% leuko. Release histamines, leukotrienes, and interleukins. Blackish blue granules
Lymphocytes characteristics?
20-35% leukocytes. B cells one fifth, T cells rest. Increase in leukemias
Monocytes characteristics?
Kidney shaped nucleus. Live for years in tissues. 5-10%
Platelets character?
No nucleus, pinched off piece of megakaryocyte.
