Male Reproductive Flashcards
What three types of cells are in seminiferous tubules, and what do they do?
Peritubular(stim by testosterone, produce TGb), sertoli(stim by TGb and FSH), and germ cells(produce sperm)
What cells form the blood testis barrier and what do they produce?
Tight junctions of sertoli cells( also have gap). Produce AMH, inhibin, ABP, estrogen. Fluid for sperm transport
What cells produce testosterone, and where are they?
Leydig cells, in the interstitial space between seminiferous tubules
Steps of spermatogenesis and major facts?
Spermatogonia(stem cells). Primary spermatocyte(diploid, meiosis one). Secondary (haploid, meiosis 2). Round spermatids(no division, produce acrosome and flagella) spermatozoa, develops in tubule
What two hormones impact spermatogenesis?
FSH and testosterone on Sertoli cells
What is the major function of the epididymis?
Store sperm and produce factor to mature them
What is the purpose of a seminal vesicle?
Make most of ejaculate and fructose for sperm energy
Is cytokinesis complete in spermatogenesis?
No
Steps of testosterone production? What is rate limiting?
LH binds leydig, activates StARD1, moving cholesterol from outer to inner mitochondrial membrane(rate limiting). Cholesterol to pregnelone, to progesterone to testosterone
Do seminal vesicles have highly folded mucosa?
Yes
What cells do epididymis have?
Pseudostratified columnar and smooth muscle.
What does the prostate look like?
Cuboidal with exocrine glands. And concretions. Secretions affect sperm motility
What are the three portions of ejaculate in order?
Sperm, prostate, seminal vesicle
