Pharmacology and presentation of Sodium Chloride 0.9%?
10ml Polyamp; 500 and 1000ml Infusion Soft Pack
Sodium Chloride is an isotonic crystalloid that acts as a vehicle for many parenteral drugs and as an electrolyte replenisher for maintenance or replacement of fluid deficits.
Indicators of Sodium Chloride 0.9%?
- A vehicle for delivery of IV/IO emergency medications
- Dilution and reconstitution of medications
- Inadequate or poor perfusion/shock.
Contraindications of Sodium Chloride 0.9%?
- Known allergy.
Cautions of Sodium Chloride 0.9%?
-PF HUH
- Patients with acute or history of heart failure
- Pre-existing renal failure
- Uncontrolled haemorrhage
- Fluid temperature and hypothermia in significant infusion.
- Haemodilution.
Side Effects of Sodium Chloride 0.9%?
- Fluid overload
- Metabolic acidosis and secondary acute kidney injury.
Dosing Regimes of Sodium Chloride 0.9%?
Inadequate or poor perfusion - Non Cardiac, Non-hypovolaemic
- Adults Suspected Sepsis = 20ml/kg IV/IO administered bolus, consult for further if required
- Paeds Suspected Sepsis = 10-20ml/kg IV/IO administered bolus, to a max dose of 20ml/kg consult for further if required
Inadequate or poor perfusion - Cardiogenic
- Adults & Paeds = 10ml/kg IV/IO, assess effect at 250ml, max dose 10ml/kg
Inadequate or poor perfusion - Hypovolaemia
- Adults & Paeds = 20ml/kg IV/IO, to a max dose 40ml/kg, consult for further
Onset and duration of Sodium Chloride 0.9%?
- Onset = Immediate
- Duration = Variable
