Pharmacology and presentation of Dexamethasone?
A
8mg/2ml Vial
Dexamethasone, a corticosteroid (glucocorticoid), mimics steroids normally secreted by the adrenal cortex. Its properties allow for inhibition of inflammatory reactions and immunosuppression. It is often also used for chemotherapy associated nausea and a number of palliative symptoms’ control.

Indicators of Dexamethasone?
A
- Bronchospasm associated with acute resp distress nonresponsive to nebulised salbutamol
- Acute exacerbation of COPD
- Suspected Croupe
- Severe Covid

Contraindications of Dexamethasone?
A
- Known allergy.

Cautions of Dexamethasone?
A
- If solution is not clear or is contaminated it should be discarded (as no antimicrobial agent).

Side Effects of Dexamethasone?
A
- NIL

Dosing Regimes of Dexamethasone?
A
Croup
- Not indicated for adults
- Paed = 60mcg/kg PO, single dose to a max of 12mg

Onset and duration of Dexamethasone?
A
- Onset = 30–60 minutes
- Duration = 72 hours
