Pharmacology and presentation of Dexamethasone?

A

8mg/2ml Vial

Dexamethasone, a corticosteroid, more specifically a glucocorticoid, mimics steroids normally secreted by the adrenal cortex. Its properties allow for inhibition of inflammatory reactions, vasocontractile actions and suppressing the immune system. It is often also used for chemotherapy associated nausea and a number of palliative symptoms’ control.

A

Croup
- Not indicated for adults
- Paed = 60mcg/kg PO, single dose to a max of 12mg
