Pharmacology and presentation of Dexamethasone?

A

8mg/2ml Vial

Dexamethasone, a corticosteroid (glucocorticoid), mimics steroids normally secreted by the adrenal cortex. Its properties allow for inhibition of inflammatory reactions and immunosuppression. It is often also used for chemotherapy associated nausea and a number of palliative symptoms’ control.

  • Bronchospasm associated with acute resp distress nonresponsive to nebulised salbutamol
  • Acute exacerbation of COPD
  • Suspected Croupe
  • Severe Covid

- Not indicated for adults
- Paed = 60mcg/kg PO, single dose to a max of 12mg
