Pharmacology and presentation of Ceftriaxone?
A
2g powder ampoule
Ceftriaxone is a broad-spectrum cephalosporin antibiotic. That inhibits production of the bacteria cell wall, causing bacteria death.

Indicators of Ceftriaxone?
A
- Suspected meningococcal septicaemia, or meningitis

Contraindications of Ceftriaxone?

- <1 month of age
- Do not co-administer with Ca containing fluids including Hartmanns
- Known allergy
- Anaphylaxis to Penicillin-based drugs.

Cautions of Ceftriaxone?
A
- Mild allergy to Penicillin-based drugs

Side Effects of Ceftriaxone?
A
- Skin rash
- Nausea/vomiting
- Pain at IM injection site

Dosing Regimes of Ceftriaxone?
A
- Reconstitute with 7mls of lignocaine to achieve 2g in 8ml, administer in 2 sites (preferably upper outer thigh) with max 4mls per site.
- Adults = 2g IM single dose
- Paeds >10years = 2g IM, single dose
- Paeds >1month = 50mg/kg IM to a max of 2g, single dose

- Onset = 60secs IM
- Duration = 1day
