Pharmacology and presentation of Ceftriaxone?

A

2g powder ampoule

Ceftriaxone is a broad-spectrum cephalosporin antibiotic. That inhibits production of the bacteria cell wall, causing bacteria death.

  • Suspected meningococcal septicaemia, or meningitis

Contraindications of Ceftriaxone?

-1PAC

A
  • <1 month of age
  • Do not co-administer with Ca containing fluids including Hartmanns
  • Known allergy
  • Anaphylaxis to Penicillin-based drugs.

Dosing Regimes of Ceftriaxone?

A
  • Reconstitute with 7mls of lignocaine to achieve 2g in 8ml, administer in 2 sites (preferably upper outer thigh) with max 4mls per site.
  • Adults = 2g IM single dose
  • Paeds >10years = 2g IM, single dose
  • Paeds >1month = 50mg/kg IM to a max of 2g, single dose
