Pharmacology and presentation of Naloxone?

0.4mg:1ml
Opiate receptor antagonist that reverses the effects of opiates, particularly respiratory depression and sedation

Indicators of Naloxone?
A
- Respiratory depression secondary to narcotics.

Contraindications of Naloxone?
A
- Known allergy.
- Newborn.

Cautions of Naloxone?
- DP Boob

- Patients with pre-existing cardiac disease
- Breastfed infants of opioid-dependent mothers
- Patients with known dependence, be prepared for agitation and possible combativeness. Adequately oxygenate pt prior

Side Effects of Naloxone?
- PC Withdraw
A
- Narcotic withdrawal: combative, vomiting, nausea, sweating, tachycardia and hypertension
- Convulsions
- Pulmonary oedema.

Dosing Regimes of Naloxone?
A
IM
- Adults = 1.6-2mg IM, repeating 10minutely as required to a max of 4mg
- Paeds = 0.1mg/kg IM, single dose only with a maximum total of 2mg
IV
- Adults = 0.1mg IV, repeating 2 minutely until pt self-ventilating to a max of 2mg IV

Onset and duration of Naloxone?
A
- Onset = 1–5 minutes
- Duration = 60 minutes
