Dissolves after adminstation increasing plasma bicarbonate levels which consumes excess hydrogen items to become carbonic acid. This buffering that a theraputic effect of raising solution pH.
Sodium bicarbonate Indications?
- Metabolic acidosis during cardiac arrest
- Tricyclic antidepressant overdose
- Hyperkalemia
- Crush injuries
Sodium bicarbonate Contraindications?
- Metabolic alkalosis
- Hypokalemia
Sodium bicarbonate Side Effects/Precautions?
- Hypernatremia
- Metabolic alkalosis
Sodium bicarbonate Adult Dose?
2 mEq/kg IV/IO
Repeat at 0.5mEq/kg IV/IO every 10 minutes
Sodium bicarbonate Pediatric Dose?
Cardiac Arrest:
Infant - 2 years: (use 4.2% solution)
Initial: 1 mEq/kg/min given over 1-2 minutes IV/IO, THEN
1 mEq/kg IV q10min of arrest
