Antiemetic
Metoclopramide Mechanism?
A Seratonin (5HT3) R and Dopamine (D2) antagonist affecting receptor sites in postrema and vagal nerve terminals which inhibits vomiting. Further, it blocks anti-peristaltic affects of apomorphine which promotes gastric and intestinal motility.
Metoclopramide Indications?
-Nausea/Vomiting
-Migraine headache
Metoclopramide Contraindications?
-Bowel obstruction
-Seizure Disorder
-Pheochromocytoma
Metoclopramide Side Effects/Precautions?
-Extrapyramidal symptoms
-Sedation
-Drowsiness
-Fatigue
-Dizziness
-CNS depression
-Bradycardia
-Tachycardia
-Hypotension
-Hypertension
-Diarrhea
Metoclopramide Adult Dose?
Nausea/Vomiting
-5-10 mg IV/IO/IM; May repeat once after 10 minutes if nausea/vomiting persists.
Pain Management - Migraine
-10 mg IV/IO infusion over 15 minutes or
-10 mg IM
