Cefazolin Classification?
Cephalosporin antibiotic
Cefazolin Mechanism?
binds to 1 or more penicillin-binding proteins, thereby arresting bacterial cell-wall peptioglycan biosynthesis and inhibiting bacterial replication
Cefazolin Indications?
- Open fracture
- Amputation proximal to hand/foot
- Major soft tissue injury (exposed tendon or bone, large deep tissue laceration/avulsion,evisceration, major open crush injury, largely visible contaminated wounds excluding road rash)
Cefazolin Contraindications?
-Known penicillin or cefazolin allergy
-Life threats not yet addressed
-Patient contact duration too short
Cefazolin Side Effects/Precautions?
-Seizure
-abdominal cramps
-diarrhea
-nausea & vomiting
-skin rash
-pain at injection site
Cefazolin Adult Dose?
Weight Based
>39kg - 2g slow IV/IO over 1-2 minutes
<39kg - 50mg slow IV/IO over 1-2 minutes

Weight Based
>39kg - 2g slow IV/IO over 1-2 minutes
<39kg - 50mg/kg slow IV/IO over 1-2 minutes
