Mesolimbic/mesocortical dopamine (D1/D2) antagonist - inhibits dopamine transmission to the limbic system and prefrontal cortex . reduction in psychotic symptoms (hallucinations, agitation, aggression, disorganized speech)
Haloperidol Indications?
-Acute psychotic episode
-Chemical restraint/extreme agitation/combativeness
Haloperidol Contraindications?
- CNS depression
- Agitation secondary to shock or hypoxia
Haloperidol Side Effects/Precautions?
-Seizures
-drowsiness
-dry mouth
-extrapyramidal symptoms (akathisia, parkinsonism, or
dystonia)
-Tachycardia
-hypotension
-prolonged QT syndrome
-Torsades
-respiratory depression

5-10mg IM

1-3mg IM
