Atropine Classification?
Parasympatholytic/Anticholinergic
Atropine Mechanism?
M2 anticholenergic agonist. Inhibits SA/AV node parasympathetic effects principally through K efflux. Positive chronotropy with no ionotropy.
Atropine Indications?
-Symptomatic braycardia
-Premed for RSI with Bradycardia
-Organophosphate poisoning
Atropine Contraindications?
- Tachycardia
- Hypersensitivity
- Hypothermic bradycardia
- Relatively contraindicated in STEMI
Atropine Side Effects/Precautions?
- Pupillary dilation
- Dry mouth
- Nausea/vomiting
- Tachycardia
- Palpitations
- Dysrhythmia
- Increased myocardial oxygen demand
Atropine Adult Dose?
-Bradycardia 0.5mg every 3-5 minutes. Max 3mg
-Organophosphate 2-5mg as needed
Atropine Pediatric Dose?
Bradycardia: 0.02 mg/kg (Max 0.5 mg). May repeat once.
Atropine Onset of Action?
Immediate
Atropine Duration of Action?
2-6 Hours
Atropine Max Dose Adult/Pediatric?
3mg & 0.5mg respectively
Atropine Routes of Administration?
IV/IO
Atropine How Supplied?
1mg/10ml prefilled syringe; 0.4 mg/ml vials
