Calcium Chloride Mechanism?
Direct replacment of elemental calcium. Using the body’s normal metabolic processes, it can help to overcome calcium channel blocker toxicity and can raise the action potential threshold for cardiac contracting cells which can help to regulated some dysrhymthias. Increases inotropic force and ventriculary automaticity.
Calcium Chloride Indications?
- Hypocalcemia
- Hyperkalemia
- Hypermagnesemia
- Beta-blocker toxicity
- Calcium channel blocker toxicity
Calcium Chloride Contraindications?
- Hypercalcemia
- VF
- Digitalis toxicity
Calcium Chloride Side Effects/Precautions?
- Vascular spasm
- Peripheral vasodilation
- Syncope
- Dysrhythmia
- Bradycardia
- Hypotension
Calcium Chloride Adult Dose?
1g IV/IO
*For Suspected Hyperkalemia or Brady IVP over 5-10 minutes
Calcium Chloride Pediatric Dose?
20 mg/kg slow IV/IO push repeated in 10 minutes. *statpearls
Calcium Chloride Onset of Action?
1-3 minutes
Calcium Chloride Duration of Action?
20-30 minutes but up to 4 hours in higher doses
Calcium Chloride Max Dose Adult/Pediatric?
Both Adult & Ped: 2g
