Muzafer Sherif’s Conformity Study
By using autokinetic effect, people changed their number of light movements to conform to the group. (Focus on Norm Formation)
Conformity Study
The idea that an individual will conform to a group opinion.
Autokinetic Effect
An apparent motion of a single point of light when presented in a dark field and observed continuously.
Solomon Asch’s Conformity Study
By using black lines on a 2 white cards, 9 subjects were asked to choose the 3 lines of the same length. (Focus on Yielding to Group Pressure)
Stanley Milgram’s Obedience Experiment
Inspired by Asch’s Conformity Study. Experimenter prods subjects to give electric shock to another person. Obedience to authority was measured by the maximum shock.
Foot-in-the Door Effect
Compliance with a small request increases the likelihood of compliance with a larger request.
Compliance
A change in behavior that occurs as a result of situational or interpersonal pressure.
Door-in-the Face Effect
People who refuse a large initial request are more likely to agree to a later smaller request.
