Developmental Psychology: Social & Emotional Development Flashcards
Sigmund Freud
First to study personality and emotional growth. He believed that human psychology and human sexuality are linked
Libido
An individual’s sexual drive which Freud believed was present at birth
Freud’s importance on the libido
He believed that libidinal energy and drive to reduce libidinal tension were the underlying dynamic forces that accounted for human psychological processes
Freud’s Stages of Psychosexual Development
The different stages where the libido guides behavior.
- Oral
- Anal
- Phallic
- Latency
- Genital
Oral Stage
The 1st stage in Freud’s Psychosexual Development which occurs from 0-1 year. The libidinal energy is centered in the mouth.
Anal Stage
The 2nd stage in Freud’s Psychosexual Development which occurs from 1-3 years. The libidinal energy is centered in the anal.
Phallic Stage
The 3rd stage in Freud’s Psychosexual Development which occurs from 3-5 years. The libidinal energy is centered in a youth’s sexual identity and which parent they identify with. In this stage, the oedipal/ electra conflict is resolved.
Oedipal Conflict
A conflict a boy will feel between wanting to replace his father and wanting to be like his father. It is resolved by establishing sexual identity and sublimating his libido to something more social acceptable.
Electra Conflict
A conflict a girl will feel between wanting to replace her mother and wanting to be like her mother. Freud felt the experience would be the same as oedipal conflict without the moral development.
Latency Stage
The 4th stage in Freud’s Psychosexual Development which occurs from 5 years to puberty. The libidinal energy is sublimated in this stage.
Genital Stage
The 5th stage in Freud’s Psychosexual Development which occurs from puberty to adulthood. The libidinal energy is appropriately developed and the individual will enter a healthy heterosexual relationship. If not, they will have varying fetishes.
Erik Erickson
Created the Psychosocial Theory.
Psychosocial Theory
The theory that social and emotional development occurs based on an individual’s ability to resolve stages of conflicts between needs and societal demands.
Trust vs Mistrust
The 1st conflict in Erickson’s Psychosocial Theory which takes place in the 1st year. Trust themselves and their environment or become suspicious of the world.
Autonomy vs Shame & Doubt
The 2nd conflict in Erickson’s Psychosocial Theory which occurs 1-3 years. Develop a sense of competence and autonomy or have a sense of doubt and lack of control of self.
