Developmental Psychology: Heredity Flashcards
Gregor Mendel
Initiated the study on genetics by studying pea plants
Gene
Basic unit of heredity
Allele
An alternative form of gene
Dominant Allele
The specific trait that is more influential
Recessive Allele
The specific trait that is less influential
Genotype
The total genetic make-up of a person
Phenotype
A total collection of expresses traits that constitutes the individual’s observable characteristics
Chromosomes
Strands of DNA
Humans have 46 chromosomes
They are organized in 23 homologous (22 pairs are autosomes + 23rd determines sex)
Somatic Cells in the human body are diploid
Chromosomes always come in pairs
Gametes
The sperm and egg cell which are haploid (they contain 23 single chromosomes)
RC Tyron
Studied inheritance of maze-running ability in laboratory rats by using selective breeding in similar traits but found similar performance in unfamiliar mazes
Family Studies
A research method studying similarity in a given characteristic in family members versus unrelated individuals.
Twin Studies
A research method studying monozygotic and dizygotic twins to distinguish the effect of shared environment and genetics. * Researchers have challenged whether either sets of twins truly experience their environment to the same degree.
Monozygotic Twins
A set of twins who are genetically identical and share 100% of their genes
Dizygotic Twins
A set of twins who share approximately 50% of their genes
Adoption Studies
A research method studying environmental influences and genetic influences on behavior.
Lewis Turman
Conducted a longitudinal study on “gifted” children.
Down’s Syndrome
A genetic anomaly where an individual has an extra 21st chromosomes. They have varying levels of intellectual disability.
Phenylketonuria (PKU)
A genetic disorder where the nervous system degenerates. They struggle to digest an amino acid found in milk and thus require a strict diet.
Klinefelter’s Syndrome
A sex chromosome abnormality where a male possesses an extra X chromosome. They are sterile and struggle with intellectual disability.
Turner’s Syndrome
A sex chromosome abnormality where a female posses only one X chromosome. They don’t develop their secondary sex characteristics.
