What is the definition of Deviance?
Behaviour that falls outside the norms or what is thought to be acceptable; goes against the moral values or laws of the sport
What is the definition of Negative deviance?
Deviance that has detrimental effect
What is the definition of Positive deviance?
Deviance where there is no intention to cause harm or break the rules.
What is the definition of Sportsmanship?
Qualities of fairness, following the rules, being gracious in defeat or victory
What is the definition of Gamesmanship?
Bending the rules/laws of a sport without actually breaking them.
What is an example of Sportsmanship?
- Shaking hands at the end of the game
- Being honest and respectful to officials
What is an example of Gamesmanship?
- Time wasting
- Claiming a catch in cricket when you know the ball has bounced
What is an example of Deviance?
- Diving for a penalty in football
- Doping - Using performance-enhancing drugs to gain an unfair advantage (e.g. Lance Armstrong’s cycling scandal).
What is an example of Positive Deviance?
- Continues to play whilst someone is injured
What is an example of Negative Deviance?
- Outside of the game situation someone could take a PED, where the rules and regulations are broken and the referee has to administer the rules
