Fitness is the ‘ability to meet the demands of an environment’.

- Diet
- Smoking
- Recreational dugs
- Alcohol
- Work/rest/sleep balance
- Activity level

What is the definition of stimulant?

What is the definition of lifestyle choice?
The choices we make about how we live and behave that impact on our health>
What is the dedinition of high-density lipoprotein (HDL)?
Sometimes known as good cholesterol, removes bad cholesterol from the body.
What is a diet?
(Lifestyle Choices)
Diet is an essential part of providing our bodies with the energy we need to work and
exercise, and the nutrients required to repair body tissues. Getting the right energy balance
is important. To maintain our body weight the number of calories in your diet should be the
same as the number of calories used through metabolic processes and physical activity.
Active people use more energy so they need more calories in their diet and more of the
foods that provide them. Although, a balanced diet is not just about calorie intake it also
requires us to intake the appropriate nutrients our body needs.
What is actvity levels?
(Lifestyle choices)
People give different reasons for not exercising or not doing enough exercise! There are
some factors that can make participating in physical activity more difficult such as: location
and travel requirements, lack of access to facilities, cost of classes or equipment and time.
Your activity level has a huge impact on your health and fitness. The most important factor
here is choice. Choosing to be active or not.
Recording what you do and when helps maintain your activity levels - how can we do this?
Physical activity needs to be planned into the time that you have available to you, some
people prefer to exercise in the morning others prefer to exercise in the evening.
What is work/rest/sleep balance?
(Lifestyle choices)
Exercise helps you to sleep better which helps your body to recover. It will help you getting
to sleep once you have gone to bed but also helps you have a deeper, more productive
nights sleep.
However, try not to exercise too late as this will have the opposite effect and mean you’re to
energised to sleep because of the release of serotonin and endorphins.
Rest is also an important aspect of training as it allows your body time to recover and adapt.
What is recreational drugs?
Recreation drugs are split into two categories legal and illegal.
Legal drugs include caffeine found in tea, coffee and energy drinks, nicotine from smoking
and ethanol more commonly known as alcohol. Even though each of these have a
negative impact on our bodies or our behaviour and accepted to some extent in society.
Illegal drugs such as heroin, cocaine, LSD, amphetamines, ecstasy and cannabis are not
accepted in society. These drugs have negative and harmful effects and can be highly
dangerous.
What is smoking?
(Lifestyle choices)
Most smokers take up the habit early in life!
As a teenager it is easy to think that you can try something and then stop. However, smoking
is highly addictive and within a short space of time people who smoke start to develop
cravings for cigarettes and can experience withdrawal symptoms if they go too long without
a cigarette.
The addictive ingredient in cigarettes is nicotine. Nicotine is a stimulant that raises
alertness. As nicotine is an addictive drug the longer someone smokes for the more
addicted they become.
What is alcohol?
(Lifestyle choices)
While caffeine is a stimulant which makes you more alert, alcohol is a depressant it slows
your reactions down and alters the way you see, hear, move, and respond to things. A small
amount of alcohol can make you feel more relaxed and less anxious. Larger amounts
causes greater change in your brain and make you ‘drunk’.
Alcohol is banned in sports such as shooting or archery where it may be used as a sedative
to produce a calming effect - which other drug is sometimes used? It is also banned in
sports where it is considered a safety risk, such as motor sports, because it slows down
reaction times and impairs your judgement.
What are the negative impact of lifestyle choices?
A negative lifestyle affects the body and mind. The negative effects can be short-term and
long-term. They may also affect others, for example, someone’s children. Generally, people
are more motivated to change their behaviour to gain positive benefits than to avoid
negative effects, especially when the negative effects may not appear until far into the
future.
