Soc13- Joints, Movements, Ligaments And Tendons Flashcards
What are Long bones?
Long bones are longer than they are wide. They don’t have to be big, small bones like finger bones (phalanges) count as long bones. A long bone has a shaft and two ends
What are Short bones?
Short bones are generally the same size in length, width and thickness.
What are Flat bones?
Flat bones usually protect organs or offer a good surface for muscles to attach to
What is an Irregular bone?
Irregular bones have odd shapes and vary in functions
Name the four joints!
- Pivot Joint
- Hinge Joint
- Ball-and-Socket Joint
- Confloid Joint
What is the Pivot Joint?
It allows bones to rotate (neck)
E.g. It allows movement of the neck
What is the Hinge Joint?
It allows only backwards and forwards motion
E.g. It is in the knee so that the leg can be bended or straightend
What is the Condyloid Joint?
It allows us to do a circular motion. E.g. The wrist which can be bended and straightend but you can also turn it in words.
What is the Ball-and-Socket Joint?
Is a long bone (ball) fitted into a-cup-shaped hole (the socket). However it does not have much muscle to protect it.
What is Extension?
Straightening movement that increases the angle between body parts
What is Flexion?
Bending movement that decreases the angle between body parts
What is Adduction?
Movement that pulls towards the midline of the body
What is Abduction?
Movement that pulls away from the midline of the body
What is Plantar-flexion?
Extending or pointing the toes down, away from the shin
What is Dorsi-flexion?
Bending or flexing the toes up, closer to the shin
