Soc 16structure of blood vessels and blood distribution Flashcards
What is Cardio-respiratory system?
The interaction of lungs and heart and lungs to supply oxygen to muscles during exercise.
Cardiovascular?
To do with the heart, blood and blood vessels together
What is vasodlilation?
When veins swell up or dilate; widening of the internal diameter (lumen) of the blood vessels to allow increase blood flow
What is vasconstriction?
When veins shrink down; narrowing the enteral diameter(lumen) of the blood vessel to DECREASE bLood flow
What are the three main functions of the cario-respiratory system?
- it transports oxygen Co2 and nutrients
- it helps the blood clot
- controls body temperature
What is respiration?
The movement of air from outside the body into the cells within tissues
What is the Diaphragm?
The primary muscle used in the porcess of inspiration, or inhalation. A dome-shaped sheet of muscle that seperstes the chest from the rest of the body cavity
What is the Trachea?
Tube that takes in air into the chest, also known as the windpipe
What are Bronchioles?
Smaller branches coming off the Bronchi.
What are Alveoli?
Tiny sacks at the end of the bronchioles where gas exchange takes place.
What is Haemoglobin?
A type of protien found in every red blood cell
What is Gaseous exchange?
The delivery of oxygen from the lungs to the bloodstream and the removal of Co2 from the tissues
What is oxygen debt?
The amount of oxygen needed at the end of a physical activity to break down any lactic acid.
That is VO2 max?
The volume of oxygen an athelete can consume while exercising at maximum capacity
How do veins benifit performance?
Veins are important in sport because the bring the deoxygenated blood back to the heart for it to be re-oxygenated, ready for use in the process of releasing energy.
How do arteries benifit performance?
The carry oxygenated blood away from the heart sending it around the body for oxygen and nutrients to be used in cells.
What is the importance of an artery?
- its a blood vessel taking blood oaway from the heart
- have thicker walls
- more elastic and carry blood at a higher blood pressure then veins
- the blood flows through a channel called the lumen
What is the aorta?
The main artery that carries blood away from your heart.
Functin of valves?
To stop the backflow of blood
